Environment & Sustainability Policy

Last updated: September 2025

At ABOVE BOARD®, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. Our mission is to raise kitchen standards while reducing the environmental impact of food preparation. We believe businesses have a responsibility to protect people and the planet, and this policy sets out our commitments.

Materials & Product Design

  • All boards are made from FSC®-certified wood fibre, sourced from responsibly managed forests.

  • Products are designed for long life, durability, and reusability, reducing the need for frequent replacements.

  • Our boards are formaldehyde-free, BPA-free, and food-safe, complying with UK/EU food contact regulations.

Circular Economy & Waste Reduction

  • We created the BoardCycle Scheme, enabling customers to return used chopping boards (plastic, wood, or wood fibre) for recycling or responsible disposal.

  • Returned boards are diverted from landfill and incineration, contributing to a more circular economy.

  • Packaging is plastic-free, using recyclable or compostable materials wherever possible.

Carbon & Energy

  • By extending product lifespan and reducing plastic use, our products help customers lower Scope 3 emissions.

  • We are committed to monitoring and reducing our own operational carbon footprint as we scale.

Safer Kitchens, Healthier Planet

  • Traditional plastic boards can shed microplastics into food. Our wood fibre design reduces that risk, protecting both human health and the environment.

  • Durable construction means fewer broken, stained, or warped boards entering waste streams.

  • Colour-coded boards support HACCP food safety compliance, helping kitchens stay hygienic and sustainable.

Supply Chain Responsibility

  • We work with suppliers who share our values of fairness, quality, and environmental responsibility.

  • Wherever possible, we prioritise partners who follow ethical labour standards and minimise environmental impact.

Continuous Improvement

  • Sustainability is a journey. We review our practices annually and seek new ways to improve.

  • We welcome feedback from chefs, caterers, and customers to make ABOVE BOARD® even more sustainable.
